It can be so easy to dwell on the things in our life that we have no control over. Our minds tell us that if we think about these things long enough they’ll simply start to go our way as if our worrying and ceaseless fretting can change the outcome of specific events. For some things, it’s just not possible, and rather than fretting over them, it’s important to put your energy toward the things in life you do have control over, including your own happiness.
1. The Past
The most obvious item we have no control over, yet worry so much about, is the past. Whether things were worse back then or better, it seems like a welcome escape from reality to worry over the things we’ve done. The best way to handle your view of the past is to inspect an event, learn from it, and move on, applying those learnings to the future instead of continuing to fret.
2. Change in Our Lives
Change is one of the only constants in life, and it’s an acquired skill to be able to roll with the punches. It’s an important one, however, and changes should be dealt with healthily and with an understanding that you’re adaptable and will make it through.
3. The Weather
On a more physical note, weather can be a huge worry for those of us who deal in outdoor events or have upcoming plans outside. The best way to handle these situations is to always have a backup plan, lessening your concern that weather may ruin your event.
4. Other People’s Opinions
Though this seems more malleable than the weather, it can be very difficult and sometimes cumbersome to change someone’s opinion of you. Feeling as though someone dislikes you can be a huge stressor, but it’s important to remember that you can’t be liked by everyone, and you just have to do what’s best for yourself and others.
5. The Future
Just like the past, the future is mostly out of your control. Though you can plan and adjust, unexpected change can come through at any time and knock your plan right off of its course. Take the things you know now, identify that change may occur, and move forward with a smart and adaptable mindset.
When we learn to let go of things we can’t change, we see our daily lives improved through the relief of stress and worry. Remember to always be mindful and put your energy toward the things in your life that are in your control.
